NL 00703.318 Transfer of Social Security Payments to the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) for Certification to Treasury

Document Identifier for Word Processor: E3318

A. Exhibit Letter

We are writing to let you know that beginning (1) the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) will send your Social Security payment to you each month.

Why The RRB Will Send Your Payments

The RRB will send your Social Security payments because (2) worked for the railroad industry for at least ten years or at least five years after 1995. If a person worked for the railroad industry for at least ten years or at least five years after 1995, the RRB is responsible for sending out the monthly Social Security payments. We will still be responsible for figuring your Social Security payments and keeping a record of your payments and earnings. We will also help you if you have any questions about your Social Security.

The amount of your Social Security payment will not change because of this action. The RRB will send you one payment around the first of each month. This payment will include your Social Security plus any Railroad Retirement payments you are due.

What You Need To Do

The U.S. Department of Treasury (Treasury) now requires electronic payments for all federal benefits. If you applied for benefits before May 1, 2011, you have until March 1, 2013, to choose an electronic payment option. However, we encourage you to choose an electronic payment option now rather than waiting until the deadline.

To avoid any interruption in your payments, you must contact Treasury at www.GoDirect.org or 1-888-544-6347 if you:

  • ā€¢

Do not have direct deposit; or

  • ā€¢

You were receiving your Social Security benefits via Direct Express

You do not need to contact Treasury if you already receive your Social Security benefits via direct deposit. The Social Security Administration will provide your direct deposit information to the RRB.
