A. Process

The Center for Health Statistics has birth and death records dating from July 1, 1907, and marriage and divorce records dating from January 1, 1968. Write for these records to the address in GN 00308.092B.1. If you are in Washington State and the birth certificate being requested is in the range of 1940 to the present, you may contact your local health department. For death records before July 1, 1907, contact the auditor in the county in which the death occurred. For very recent marriage records and those before 1968, contact the auditor in the county in which the license was issued. For very recent divorce records and those before 1968, contact the clerk in the county in which the divorce was granted.

4. Remarks:

If a birth certificate issued by the State office does not contain the recordation date, assume, absent information to the contrary, that the record was made soon after birth. Document requests can take up to eight weeks by mail. Make follow-ups directly with the Center for Health Statistics at (360) 236-4300.

Each 10 year search for death/marriage/divorce records costs $20.00.
