SSA offices are responsible for contacting the SC Division of Vital Records (DVR)
directly to purchase and/or verify records. The SC DVR charges $12.00 for verification-only
requests from all SSA offices. SSA offices must include a third party draft payable
to the SC Division of Vital Records with each request, and SSA must include a photo
ID and signature with the request. SSA FOs should follow procedures in GN 00308.001B.3.for identification requirements. The parallel FO cannot follow up on requests. No
search for a birth record will be made if the mother's maiden name is not shown on
the request.
Divorce records are available from the State office beginning July 1, 1962, and marriage
records beginning July 1, 1950.
Can FO verify, certify or obtain free copy of birth/death record? No
