GN 01711.010 Overview of the Norwegian Social Security System - Introduction

Norway provides old-age, survivors, and disability benefits through two separate programs:

•

a basic pension program that pays residence-based benefits, and
•

a supplementary pension program that pays earnings-related benefits.

In addition to retirement, survivors and disability benefits, the Norwegian system also provides medical and health insurance benefits, unemployment benefits and occupational injury benefits.
