DI 13005.105 Field Office (FO) Overview of the Disability Determination Services (DDS) Procedures for Medical Improvement Not Expected (MINE) or Mine-Equivalent Cases

Upon receipt of the case folder, the Disability Processing Branch (DPB) and DDS will:

  1. 1. 

    Review the file to assure full development of the MINE or MINE-equivalent impairment(s).

  2. 2. 

    Telephone the beneficiary and representative payee, inform them of the legislated review requirement, and initiate completion of the SSA-454-BK (Continuing Disability Review Report).

  3. 3. 

    Send a confirmation review notice documenting the initiation of the MINE or MINE-equivalent continuing disability review (CDR) process.

  4. 4. 

    Send an SSA-827 to the individual for a signature and date, along with an SSA-454-BK to complete if it was not complete during the initial telephone contact.

  5. 5. 

    When appropriate, process a continuance based on the above.

If, there is a need for FO assistance, the DDS may use the form SSA-883-U3 (Request of Evidence Assist Disability) or send an electronic assistance request (AR) in an electronic CDR (eCDR). The DDS will indicate the requirement on the assistance form. For electronic FO case procedures, see DI 81010.000.
