A. Process

Birth, marriage, divorce, and death records are available from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Vital Records Office.

Alternately, birth, death, and marriage certificates may be obtained at the Register of Deeds in the county where the event took place and divorce certificates may be obtained from the clerk of court in the county where the divorce was filed.

Certificates are available for:

  • Births since October, 1913

  • Deaths since January 1, 1930

  • Marriages since January 1, 1962

  • Divorces since January 1, 1959

NOTE: Records are not available for 90 days.

The parallel Raleigh NC FO cannot verify, certify or obtain a free copy of birth/death records.
