RM 00207.015 Assigning an SSN with Identifying Information

Procedure

Obtain identifying information before assigning an SSN.

1. Life Claim

STEP ACTION
1 Get a completed and signed SS-5.
2 Conduct the mandatory in-person interview with applicants age 12 or older with no prior SSN.
3 See RM 10211.500 if evidence establishes the applicant is an alien not legally in the U.S.
4 Develop full evidence of age, identity, U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status even if the claimant alleges having an SSN. This will prevent delaying the claim for further development.
5 See RM 10205.020 if the SS-5 application data is returned “unable to locate” (UTL).

Follow RM 10225.080.
