RM 00207.010 Obtaining Additional Identifying Information for SSN

Procedure

Get additional information to verify the SSN when identifying information on the application differs from information on the enumeration data base records.

Follow these steps to obtain identifying information:

STEPACTION
1Determine if the worker ever used different dates of birth or gave a different place of birth.
2Request other name or variations of names (e.g., nicknames, other married surnames) used by the worker. Get information about the worker's alleged employment in the U.S. after 1936.
3Request information the worker may have given on a previous application for an SSN (e.g., names of step or foster parents instead of natural parents).
4If appropriate, obtain an SS-5 to update the NUMIDENT and if necessary issue an SSN card.
