GN 01701.120 Use of Simplified Method For Determining U.S. Quarters of Coverage (QCs) in Totalization Claims

A. Policy

1. Simplified method may be used

Where applicable, the simplified method may be used when determining the number of U.S. QCs to be added to foreign coverage to determine whether fully insured status is met based on combined coverage.

2. Simplified method may Not be used

The simplified method may not be used to:

  • determine if the number holder meets the 6 QCs minimum requirement for Totalization benefits,

  • determine the pro rata fraction when computing Totalization benefits (see GN 01701.200D), or

  • determine the number of U.S. QCs to be certified to the foreign country.

B. Procedure

Where the simplified method yields the greatest number of U.S. QCs, add the number of QCs determined using the simplified method to the number of QCs based on foreign coverage (see GN 01701.140) to determine fully insured status.
