Under the Italian system, people are granted coverage credits for certain periods
during which they did not work in covered employment. These "deemed" periods of coverage
may be granted for periods of Italian military service, periods of illness and certain
other periods considered equivalent to periods of work under Italian law.
If an applicant wishes to receive credit for deemed periods of Italian coverage, he
or she must submit evidence to establish the deemed periods. Except for Italian military
service (see GN 01705.214), there are no specific rules on what type of evidence is acceptable.
