GN 01755.020 Hungarian Benefits Eligibility Requirements
A. Types of Hungarian Social Security benefits
This section describes old-age retirement, disability, and survivors benefits. These are the only Hungarian benefits included within the scope of the agreement.
B. Description of eligibility requirements
1. Old-age retirement benefit
To qualify for an old-age benefit, a worker must:
be age 63 with 20 years of service (age 62 with at least 20 years of service if born before January 1, 1952); or
be age 62 with 15 years of service for a partial benefit.
NOTE: Women with 40 years of service may be eligible for an old-age retirement benefit regardless of age.
2. Disability benefits
To qualify for disability benefits, a worker must have a loss of at least 40 percent of working capacity, and must:
have been insured for at least:
1,095 days (3 years) within 5 years;
2,555 days (7 years) within 10 years; or
3,650 days (10 years) within 15 years before submitting a claim;
not have performed any gainful activity in Hungary or abroad; and
not receive any regular cash benefits.
3. Survivor benefits
Hungary pays survivor benefits for the following:
To qualify for survivor benefits, the deceased worker must have died as an old-age pensioner or met the following conditions:
Age of death
Accrued service time
2 years (or within 180 days after finishing studies)
between ages 22 and 25
between ages 25 and 30
between ages 30 and 35
between ages 35 and 45
after reaching age 45
C. Administrative organization for Hungarian benefits
The Central Administration of National Pension Insurance (ONYF) operates the public pension system of Hungary. If inquirers request additional information about Hungarian benefits, advise that the Social Security Administration (SSA) cannot provide official information about Hungarian benefits.
