GN 99002.200 Introduction

The instructions in this transmittal apply only to the following Spanish language applications; SSA-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 16, 18, 19, 21, and 8000. Also covered by these instructions are two SSI redetermination forms, the SSA-8200F4 and the SSA-8202.

Under these instructions, applications and the SSA-8200F4 will be offered when available if there is a bilingual interviewer in the office who can conduct the interview in Spanish. Mail the SSA-8202 to recipients based on the presence of the Spanish indicator on the SSR. Enclose the English version of the SSA-8202 along with a cover letter indicating that either version of the form can be used.

Because all items of Spanish language applications are numbered to exactly correspon to the equivalent English application, no translation should be necessary. Occasionally an entry must be made that requires the use of Spanish terminology such as the claimant's occupation. When this occurs, make the entry using Spanish terminology with the English translation appearing in parentheses above the Spanish entry. Remarks or narratives will be written in English on the Form SSA-795, Statement of Claimant or Other Person. Complete any other forms used during the claims taking process in English on the English version of the form.

Notice instructions have been separated from application instructions due to the introduction of a simplified set of criteria to be used in identifying claimants who should be offered Spanish applications.
