RS 00620.071 Railroad (RR) Recomputations

A. Requirements for RR recomputations

  1. 1.

A RR recomputation may apply for a number holder (NH) who:

    • dies after 08/1950 and before 1959; and

    • entitled to retirement income benefits (RIB) or disability income benefits (DIB) in the month of death.

  2. 2.

Includes RR earnings not previously treated as wages.

  3. 3.

    No application required.

B. Death computations

The following are timeframes for death computations:

  1. 1.

    Death Before 1959:

    • Reopens previous computation or recomputation.

    • Considers all formulas available at that time.

    • RR compensation is creditable for increment years.

  2. 2.

Death in 1959 or 1960 - use only the 1958 primary insurance amount (PIA) or revised primary insurance benefit.

  3. 3.

Death after 1960 and before 01/02/1966 - use the 1960 New Start or the 1960 Old Start.

NOTE: Rework the last previous computation or recomputation under a 1960 method, even though we may not have applied it previously. Wages, self-employment income (SEI) and RR compensation for the years available in the previous computation are considered. There must be at least two computation base years, one of which may be the year of previous filing. The requirement that the computation elapsed period end no earlier than 1961 does not apply.
