RS 02809.001 General - RRB Certification Cases

The Railroad Retirement Act of 1974, effective January 1, 1975, requires the Social Security Administration (SSA) to certify the payment of certain RSDI claims to the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) rather than to the Treasury Department. RRB determines the total amount of payment under the combined provisions of the Social Security and Railroad Acts, to the beneficiary(ies) of SSA claims and certifies the amount to the Treasury Department for payment. (Instructions concerning RRB certification cases are located in RS 01601.310)

When the situation meets the critical case definition (as stated in RS 02801.000), the district office will send a Critical Case Administrative Message. The inquiries Specialist will contact the RRB by telephone to request expedited payment and will notify the district office of the actions they have taken.
