A disability determination is necessary when the claim meets one of the following conditions:

• •

  Underpayments would be due to a surviving spouse or a parent of a disabled/blind child who meet the requirements (see SI 02101.007);

• •

  There are unpaid medical expenses and SSA makes Medicaid eligibility determinations for the State (under agreement) and the State welfare agency requests a determination for Medicaid purposes; or

• •

  The claimant was receiving cash assistance from the State’s interim assistance reimbursement (IAR) program and had submitted written authorization for SSA to withhold SSI payments to reimburse the State. For IAR information, see SI 02003.005.

If DDS directly receives notice of the disabled claimant's death, the DDS should immediately notify the FO. The FO must determine whether the DDS still needs to make a medical determination.

When the FO receives notice of the claimant’s death while a claim is pending at DDS, the FO takes the following actions:

1. 1. 

   Inputs the death notice date to the claimant’s record, as appropriate; and

2. 2. 

   Notifies the DDS immediately as to whether a medical determination is still necessary on the decedent’s claim(s) per DI 11055.050A in this section.
