GN 00202.001 Leads and Inquiries

A. Introduction

When an inquiry is received, it is important to determine if it is a lead for potential benefits or a protective filing. See GN 00204.010 for the protective writing criteria and SI 00601.015 through SI 00601.025 for the title XVI protective filing policy.

B. Definitions

1. Title II lead

A lead for title II benefits is a written or oral indication of potential entitlement where there is no intent to file by the party who furnishes the lead information.

2. Title XVI lead

A lead for title XVI benefits is a written indication of potential entitlement where there is no intent to file by the party who furnishes the lead information.

NOTE: An oral inquiry about supplemental security income benefits that meets the criteria in SI 00601.025 is a protective filing.
