GN 00312.382 Sweden – Vital Statistics Records

A. Introduction to vital statistics records in Sweden

A Utdrag ur fodelse-och dopbok is a birth certificate issued by a parish office. A Registerutdrag is a birth, marriage or death certificate issued by the tax authorities. These certificates are normally not stamped or signed by the issuing office.

Prior to 7/1/91, the Lutheran Church acted as an official part of the Swedish Government and registered vital statistics events for all persons, regardless of whether they are members of that church.

When requesting certificates from large cities, include the individual's last street address in that city, the name of the church attended and the school attended, if appropriate. This information is needed to identify the individual parish in areas in which there is more than one parish.

B. Procedure – Birth Certificates

1. Office to Contact

Local tax office of the tax authority (Skatteverket) where the individual is residing or last resided.

NOTE: In response to a request for a birth, marriage or death certificate, the tax authority will issue a Personbevis that is normally neither stamped nor signed. Therefore, requests should specifically ask that the document be stamped.

C. Procedure – Baptismal Certificates

1. Office to Contact

Parish Office (Pastorsexpedition) where the event took place.

2. Fee

No fee.

D. Procedure – Marriage Certificates

1. Office to Contact

a. Marriage Before 7/1/91

Parish or civil authority which performed the marriage.

b. Marriage After 6/30/91

Local tax office of the tax authority (Skatteverket where either spouse resides. If residing outside Sweden, the local tax office from where either spouse emigrated. (See NOTE in GN 00312.382B1.)

2. Fee

No fee.

E. Procedure – Death Certificates

1. Office to Contact

a. Death Before 7/1/91

Parish of residence at the time of death.

b. Death After 6/30/91

Local tax office of the tax authority (Skatteverket) where the death occurred. (See NOTE in GN 00312.382B.1.)

2. Fee

No fee.
