RM 10250.005 The Self Check Process and the Self Check Notice

A. The six-step Self Check process for users

The following steps outline the actions a user takes to complete the Self Check process. The entire process should take only a few minutes to complete.

Description

1

Access the Self Check service

The user accesses Self Check through a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website. www.uscis.gov/selfcheck.

2

Enter ID data

The user enters basic identifying information (name, date of birth, etc.) on the pre-Self Check screens.

3

Confirm identity by answering questions

DHS sends this data to a third party identity assurance service. Within seconds, the third party generates questions that only the user can answer. (Banks and credit agencies use a similar process to confirm identity.)

4

Enter data for Self Check

Upon successfully completing the identity authentication questions, the user then completes the Self Check screens. These screens ask for the same information that a new employee provides to an employer on the DHS Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification), such as name, date of birth, Social Security number (SSN), and citizenship status. If the user provided this information in step 2, Self Check prefills the fields.

5

Get results

Self Check compares the information to the Social Security Administration (SSA) and DHS databases and provides a response within seconds of either “Work Authorization Confirmed,” “Possible Mismatch with Social Security Information,” or “Possible Mismatch with Immigration Information.”

6

Print Mismatch Notice

If there is a mismatch with SSA data, Self Check provides possible reasons for the mismatch and actions to resolve it. Self Check also provides access to a printable notice called Self Check’s “Notice of Mismatch with SSA Records.” It is optional for the user to print the notice and bring it to SSA. For an example of the notice see RM 10250.005B.3.

B. Notice of Mismatch with SSA Records

The following sections provide detailed information about the Self Check “Notice of Mismatch with Social Security Administration (SSA) Records.”

1. Purpose of the Self Check notice

DHS created a printable “Notice of Mismatch with Social Security Administration (SSA) Records” that displays on the Self Check screen when a mismatch occurs. This notice provides the user with an official notice that documents the discrepancy between the information the user entered into Self Check and SSA’s Numident. It is optional for the user to print the notice and bring it to SSA. For an example of the notice see RM 10250.005B.3.

2. Mismatch reasons

The following table lists the five possible mismatch reasons that appear on the Self Check “Notice of Mismatch with Social Security Administration (SSA) Records.” These are the same reasons listed on the E-Verify Tentative Nonconfirmation and E-Verify SSA Referral notices. For more information, access the links to related E-Verify Program Operations Manual System (POMS) sections.
