NL 00803.045 Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) Notices - Use of the SSA-L8151, SSA-L8155 and SSA-L8166

A. PROCESS

Notice Before COLA

Before the month a COLA becomes effective, the system usually generates a notice to tell the recipient about the event and how much his/her SSI payments will be. If the COLA will result in an increase in SSI payments, the system generates an SSA-L8151. If the COLA will result in a decrease (usually the result of title II COLA coordination), the system generates an SSA-L8155. If the COLA will result in the same amount of money due, the system generates an SSA-L8166.

B. WHEN TO USE

Issue a COLA notice manually when:

  • A recipient receives protected payments pending a decision on an appeal of a different issue; or

  • Some other systems limitation exists (e.g., force pay).
