Aliens who are removed from the U.S. are not eligible for SSI benefits. If individuals
who are removed are SSI recipients, their SSI payments must be suspended. The Department
of Homeland Security (DHS) transmits removal listings to SSA. SSA matches the data
against the supplemental security record (SSR) monthly. DHS performs functions previously
performed by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).
The match between the SSR and DHS' removal information will begin in the spring of
2004, along with the first 3D diaries and alerts. Cases with a 3D diary present during
the June 2004 redetermination merge run will be selected as “limited issues.”
(NOTE: In some POMS or other instructions, and in the alert itself, there are references
to “BCIS”. “BCIS” was a bureau in the Department of Homeland Security that no longer
exists, and DHS is undergoing further reorganization. Wherever you see “BCIS”, this
is referring to Department of Homeland Security information.)
