A. Process

Divorce records since April 1949 are available from the Clerk of the county where the petition was filed. The cost of copy varies. Marriage records since July 1911 are available from the Probate Judge in the county where the license was issued. Cost varies.

Birth and death records are available from all county health departments. The cost is $12.00.

SSA offices are responsible for contacting the SC Division of Vital Records (DVR) directly to purchase and/or verify records. The SC DVR charges $12.00 for verification-only requests from all SSA offices. SSA offices must include a third party draft payable to the SC Division of Vital Records with each request, and SSA must include a photo ID and signature with the request. SSA FOs should follow procedures in GN 00308.001B.3.for identification requirements. The parallel FO cannot follow up on requests. No search for a birth record will be made if the mother's maiden name is not shown on the request.

Divorce records are available from the State office beginning July 1, 1962, and marriage records beginning July 1, 1950.
