GN 03316.150 Disclosure Without Consent for Requests from News Media
When incorrect information has been given to the news media, if possible, refute the misinformation only with general non-identifiable information.
If the news media seeks personally identifiable information, and you do not have the individual’s written consent to disclosure, notify the regional Public Affairs Officer. He/she will refer all pertinent facts to the Press Office to consider (in consultation with the SSA Privacy Officer) whether or not the information should be released.
CAUTION: Do not disclose personally identifiable information to a newspaper “Action Line” or similar news media advocacy program unless SSA has the individual’s written consent statement in its possession.
