RS 01404.205 Developing Wage Information for Members of Uniformed Services - General

A. Definitions

The following definitions apply to the development of military service wages:

1. PSSO

PSSO - Parallel Social Security office to military employer. (This is applicable only in POMS sections concerning military service.)

2. Active duty

Active duty is defined as:

  • Permanent uniform service employment status with a military employer; or

  • Temporary active duty for training or extended active duty — generally applies to reservist.

3. Inactive duty

Inactive duty is duty by reservists other than active duty in RS 01404.205A.2. above (e.g., weekend drill).

B. Policy

If military service is not posted, or posted incorrectly, apply the appropriate guidelines in RS 01404.120 and RS 01404.140 to request feedback and or query Suspense.

E/R corrections may be made for basic pay and inactive duty compensation in IC.

DMW are used only in computing benefit amounts. Corrections or adjustments to the amount of DMW cannot be processed in IC nor by SSA -7010-U5. (RS 01404.230)

C. Procedure — development summary

1. General

Request W-2/W-2c from claimant first, but, if not available, either request evidence of wages from the military employer or develop evidence of military service that can be used to calculate wages per RS 01404.205C.3.b.

2. LAG wages

Develop LAG wages per RS 01404.005

3. PRELAG wages

D. Procedure — request from military employers

Request wage information for members of the uniformed services as shown below:

1. Military Employers

2. Army or Air Force Reserve

3. Army and Air National Guard

    See RS 01404.215 for guidelines for Army and Air Force Guard.

    See RS 01404.320 for a sample request to a State Adjutant General.

4. Method

  1. a. 

    Send Form E562 (Electronic 562 – Request for Assistance) to PSSO to obtain Form SSA-7011-F4 (Statement of Employer).

  2. b. 

    Include the following information on Form E562:

    • service member's full name and service serial number(s);

    • SSN;

    • periods of service;

    • if the service member is living, date and place of separation from the last period of service;

    • if the service member died while in service, date of death and last place of service;

    • if the service member died out of service, last place and date of service and date of death;

    • if the service member was separated because of disability, date that disability occurred and date and place of separation; and

    • if the service member was a reservist, show this and indicate whether they were on short-term active duty for training or extended active duty.

EXCEPTION: See RS 01404.215 for making requests for members of Army and Air National Guard.
