GN 00307.175 Calendar Conversions and Variations in Writing Dates

A. Policy

1. General

Since other countries have used different calendars at various times, SSA does not assume the date on a record is according to the Gregorian calendar. SSA considers the date on which a document was issued or the event recorded to determine the calendar used and whether the date(s) must be converted.

SSA does not assume the month and day correspond to the Gregorian date if a date is shown by other than the Gregorian calendar.

2. RCC Documents

SSA assumes the Gregorian calendar was used regardless of when other church and civil authorities in the country adopted this calendar.

3. Greek Orthodox Church Records

SSA assumes the Gregorian calendar was used to record events in the Middle East after February 1924 (the Greek Orthodox Church in the Middle East adopted this calendar in 1924—1 year after the Greek Government's official adoption of it).

B. Procedure

Translate dates as they are shown on the document. Use a translator's note (GN 00301.190) to show the calendar conversions. For example, March 2, 1905 (Julian calendar) converts to March 15, 1905 (Gregorian calendar).

Be alert to cases in which the date shows the day first and then the month since many Europeans use this format (i.e., February 7, 1920 could be shown as 7/II/20 or as 7/2/20).

NOTE: Months are abbreviated occasionally by writing the number equivalent of the first part of the name—7/ber, 8/ber, 9/ber and 10/ ber as September, October, November and December.

Refer calendar conversions to CTS in OIO if the dates cannot be converted by instructions in this subchapter or there is a question.
